Regional Restrictions and Sports Blackouts
Sports broadcasting rights are sold by region. Local and regional sports networks (RSNs) may have exclusive rights to show a team’s games within specific ZIP codes. National broadcasters may also have exclusive rights to certain matchups, which means local channels or streaming services must block those games. A blackout means the event cannot be shown on a particular channel or platform in certain areas, even if you subscribe to the team’s channel or package. As a result, not all games involving teams included in your package are always available. Availability can vary by day, by opponent, and by whether the game is carried nationally, locally, or by a league streaming service.
